AI Is No Accident for Business Success

The old saying goes, accidents happen. The saying is a subtle reminder that most accidents are not a good thing and that they occur regularly.

Occasionally, though, good things happen by accident. This week we are highlighting a few famous cases where major discoveries happened unexpectedly.

In fact, some of the items we use every day may have never been found if not for a chance occurrence or small twist of fate.

Seeing A New World

Take for example the X-ray. In 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen was working with cathode ray tubes in his lab. Even with the tube covered in a dark room, he noticed an eerie glow emitting from a nearby chemically coated screen. Curious to understand this phenomenon, Röntgen tried blocking the rays using various materials like paper and wood, but the glow still appeared. When he used his hand to cover the tube and screen, he could see the bones projected onto the screen. Astounded, he replaced the screen with a photographic plate and produced the first X-ray image showing the bones inside his wife's hand. This accidental observation led to a groundbreaking discovery and new medical capabilities.

If You First Don’t Succeed Throw It on The Stove

Some inventions come out of frustration and perseverance. In 1839, American chemist Charles Goodyear began working to make rubber more durable in extreme temperatures. At that time, rubber would become brittle and crack in the cold or melt in high heat. After years of effort trying chemicals like magnesia and lime, Goodyear hadn't succeeded. The story goes that one day he angrily threw a rubber and sulfur mixture he was working with onto a hot stove, surely ruining another failed sample. But when he returned, he found the combination had vulcanized and transformed into a heat-resistant, pliable material. This accidental breakthrough paved the way for practical uses of rubber.

Another invention has had a “slippery” history. Roy Plunkett was working with gases for the DuPont company to improve refrigeration in the 1930s. He had stored some gas samples in containers and went to check on them one day, noticing the tanks felt strangely light. Opening them up, he found only a waxy residue remaining. Intrigued, he analyzed this fluon polymer resin further and discovered unique properties: it was heat resistant, slick, and inert to corrosion. This accidental substance was soon applied for non-stick cookware, released as Teflon in the 1950s.

A Refined Accident

Sometimes it's not the scientists themselves but unrealizing users that find unexpected solutions. Vaseline, or petroleum jelly, can be considered one such accident. In 1859, chemist Robert Chesebrough visited an oil field and heard workers talking about a substance they called "rod wax." This petroleum byproduct had a gel-like consistency, and workers would apply it to injuries sustained doing difficult manual jobs in the oil field. Chesebrough was intrigued enough to take some home for testing in his lab. He found the material had unique water-repelling properties combined with skin-softening effects. After refining the petroleum jelly substance further, Chesebrough patented the process and began marketing it as Vaseline.

The Big Accident That Started It All

Even the beginnings of the universe itself were discovered by accident. In 1964, astronomers Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories researching how microwave signals bounced off satellites. However, they detected strange constant background "noise" coming equally from all directions with their equipment. No matter where they pointed their giant radio antenna, this buzz persisted. It soon became apparent that they were detecting remnants of the cosmic radiation left over from the explosive start of the universe, in other words evidence supporting the budding "Big Bang" theory. Their cosmic accident led to a 1978 Nobel Prize.

AI Is No Accident

While the discoveries above arose through chance, many innovations today are the result of intentional engineering often aided by new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Every day, innovations in AI are unlocking new solutions for businesses to adopt. From dynamic social post creation to predictive data analytics, AI has the power to revolutionize how companies operate. For example, AI tools can now generate compelling graphics and copy tailored to a company's brand guidelines. Other solutions can pore through customer data to identify trends and build predictive models for reducing customer loss as well as boosting lifetime value.
