As Easy as Pie: AI Is Simple Math for Small Business

This week we celebrate two words that sound the same but have totally different meanings. One is a mathematical constant, Pi. The other is a delectable dessert, pie.

Let’s cut into what makes this week so mathematically delicious, Pie week.

Pi R Square, No Pie are Round

Pi, is denoted by the Greek letter π, is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.

It's an irrational number. Not irrational like an angry child denied dessert, in math that means it has an infinite number of decimal places without any repeating pattern. The record for reciting the decimal places correctly is over 70,000 digits. It has been a science fiction go to that when a computer takes over to have it spend it’s central processing power on figuring out Pi.

The concept of Pi has been known for thousands of years. The ancient Babylonians and Egyptians used approximations of Pi in their calculations. It was Greek mathematician Archimedes (287-212 BC) who was the first to calculate Pi with a high degree of accuracy. He used a geometric approach, inscribing and circumscribing polygons around a circle.

In the 15th century, the symbol "π" was first used by the Welsh mathematician William Jones. It was later popularized by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in the 18th century.

With the advent of computers, Pi has been calculated to trillions of digits after the decimal point. However, for most practical purposes, 3.14159 is sufficiently accurate, and in Junior High geometry 3.14 for short.

Now Time for Some Dessert

The other pie, is of course a baked dish with a pastry crust and a filling, has been enjoyed by people for centuries.

Again, those ancient Egyptians were first known to make a type of pie filled with honey, nuts, and fruits.

During the time of the Roman Empire, pies took on a unique role. Romans crafted a pastry made from flour, oil, and water to cover their meat of choice. However, interestingly, this pastry was not initially meant to be consumed along with the savory filling. Instead, its primary purpose was to preserve the flavorful juices within the pie. Imagine it as a protective layer for the succulent meat inside.

Thanks to the Roman Empire’s extensive roadways and vibrant trade system, their culinary inventions spread across Europe. As a result, the world of pies expanded throughout the continent. However, it was Great Britain that truly elevated pies to a higher level.

In medieval England, pies were often filled with meat, such as beef, lamb, or fowl. These savory pies were a staple of the diet.

The transition from savory to sweet pies occurred over several centuries, with various cultural influences shaping this shift. As trade routes expanded and culinary ideas flowed across Europe, new ingredients and flavors entered the pie scene.

As sugar became more accessible, people began experimenting with sweet fillings. Fruits like apples, pears, and berries found their way into pies. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices were added to enhance the taste of sweet pies.

In the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I is said to have enjoyed cherry pie. Legend has it that she once received a pie with a hidden message inside, warning her of a plot against her life.

Pies became popular in America during the colonial era. The colonists brought their pie-making traditions from Europe and adapted them to the ingredients available in the New World.

Today, pies come in countless varieties, from classic apple and pumpkin to more unique flavors like chocolate silk and key lime.

Pie, Pi and AI

Today Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be compared to one of our favorite math constructs and sweet meal endings.

Just as bakers experiment with unique pie fillings, AI models generate creative content like poems, and stories. But it can also give us savory recipes like chatbots that can supply customer service 24/7 and help a small business with their accounting functions.

But AI can also be precise like calculating Pi to millions of decimal places, AI can process vast amounts of data with incredible precision and can even create complex computer code.

All three inspire innovation, whether in unique taste combinations, mathematical research or cutting-edge technology.

So, whether you’re savoring a warm slice of pie, pondering the mysteries of Pi, or marveling at the capabilities of AI, each brings its own flavor to the table.
