Pulling Back the Curtain On AI

"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." This iconic line from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz is recognizable even to those who have never seen the movie.

But what is the story behind the legend of Dorothy and her ruby red slippers?

The History of the Wizard Behind the Wizard

The Wizard of Oz was published in 1900 by L. Frank Baum, born in 1856.

As a young man, Baum founded a newspaper before turning to fiction writing. The inspiration for Dorothy's adventures came from Baum's first Oz story in 1899 called "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." This children's book grew into a smash hit, spawning thirteen additional Oz books over his career.

In his stories, Baum brought to life the vibrant Land of Oz, the Emerald City, Munchkin Country and more.

The beloved 1939 film introduced Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion to the big screen. Though initially moderate success, television reruns from the 1950s cemented the movie as an enduring classic.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

There are a few legends about how Baum named Oz. While telling stories, children asked where his characters were from. He opened an atlas randomly pointing to Australia (AUS), inspiring “Oz.” Another suggests “Oz” came from his filing cabinet labeled A-N and O-Z.

From Page to Screen to Cultural Legend

Though Baum passed in 1919, his Oz tales sparked an incredible legacy across Broadway, film and beyond. A century after Dorothy’s journey began, Baum's worlds still capture our imagination. We have him to thank for some of fiction’s most unforgettable characters, uplifting messages, and magical lands that continue inspiring dreamers everywhere.

Exploring Parallels Between Two Worlds of Wonder

Like Oz, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tantalizes society with magical potential. But while Oz falls short of utopian promise, AI’s is still to be determined.

The true test is how we can build it to benefit society, not just showcase technology. Inner courage and ethics shape both tools towards progress. It may feel that Oz and AI share mysterious origins, but AI’s real magic rests in how judiciously we apply its power.
