Back in the 1970s, Chevrolet introduced a series of ads with the tagline, “baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet.” According to Car and Driver, for many years it was voted the most influential car commercial of all time. What the ad highlighted were the things considered “all American”. Still today there are several things that we enjoy that the rest of the world looks at and says, “that’s so American” and they don’t always mean it as a compliment.
Let’s start with apple pie. The original recipe for this classic American dish can be traced back to England in 1381 published in an English cookbook. The Pilgrims and Dutch brought over apple seeds and the pie formula when they emigrated to the New World. But, as the recipe underwent changes in the US due to our choice of apples and the addition of spices like cinnamon and, of course, sugar, our pies became less tart than their English counterparts, embodying the phrase 'as American as apple pie'. Speaking of spices, as we Americans usher in what we call 'Fall' (with most of the rest of the world using the more formal term 'Autumn', highlighting yet another difference), we also celebrate the onset of Pumpkin Spice Season. Recently, the US, and North America in general, has embraced this combination of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves in everything from coffee to cereal to Twinkies (another delicacy that the rest of the world does not quite understand). The love of coffee is a worldwide phenomenon, but the iconic status we place on it here in the US is gaining traction in non-traditional areas. The American penchant for coffee, for some of our forefathers, was a form of protest stemming from events like the Boston Tea Party, the American Revolution, and other tax-related disputes, choosing it over the more traditional British Tea. But it isn’t just about food; there are other American traditions that have the rest of the world scratching their heads. Take our footwear, for example. Cowboy boots, though heavily influenced by Spanish traditional boots from the West, are a common fashion accessory in the US. While other countries are adopting them more and more, we Americans have certainly taken it to another level. Many of us wear them as part of our normal work and formal attire, which some in the world look down upon this practice of using “work” boots in more formal areas. This now leads us to the distinct American affinity for trucks. While we Americans love our big vehicles, in many other parts of the world, factors like fuel efficiency, cost, road conditions, and parking availability make smaller cars, pickups, or motorcycles more common. For example, according to the Ford Motor Company the F Series is a big seller in North America but overseas it has only a small trickle of vehicle purchases.
