The earliest version of the favorite game, Monopoly was actually a condemnation of a real estate monopoly. In 1903 Lizzie Magie invented a game called Landlords. There were two versions of the rules. One version rewarded all players when they worked together to create wealth. The other version was set up to create a monopoly of land and crush the other opponents. After playing the game at a friend's house, Charles Darrow took home the written directions and created a similar game with just the ruthless part of the directions. The result is the game that all of us have probably played at one time or the other in our life. Darrow based his streets on Atlantic City, New Jersey. Some changes were made purposefully (Mediterranean Avenue is really Arctic Avenue in Atlantic City) and accidentally (Marvin Gardens is really Marven Gardens). Eventually the Darrow family, with some assistance of a graphic designer, created the games by hand. Initially, Darrow distributed the game through Wanamaker's Department Store in Philadelphia and simultaneously attempted to sell the concept to Milton Bradley and Parkers Brothers. Both declined to buy the game until Parker Brothers saw how it was selling and that Darrow had orders from other other Department Stores. Soon after declaring Darrow as the sole inventor, it was discovered that there were many variations of the game east of the Mississippi River which were either bought or discredited by Parker Brothers, leaving Darrow as the inventory. Darrow quickly became the first millionaire board game inventor. The game has gone through some minor changes since its inception, but other than house rules (like collecting money when you land on Free Parking) has remained relatively the same from generation to generation.
